NFL Draft 2008 – An Eye On The Future
by Reed Terry The NFL draft has become an annual frenzy with fans that may have to stand in lines for hours to get a free pass to the event. In fact if a fan is sharp enough, he can stay on to attend the two days of the draft and will be rewarded by a VIP pass to the next years’ draft! If that is not reason enough to stay on and witness the entire drafting process, then I can’t think of a better one. The Draft Simplified For a new fan, the drafting process can get quite complex. However, suffice it to say that teams that have fared worst in the previous season get to pick their players first. There are rules to handle every eventuality to determine which team ought to choose first. These finally end in the toss of a coin if the positions can’t be determined. The idea is really quite simple. The NFL wants to ensure as even a competition as possible by giving the weaker teams a chance to choose. Draft 2008 Several rookie players have been rewarded for their fine performances this year and have made it through the drafting process. Amongst those, the ones that readily come to mind are the following:
As can be seen, the drafting process is a carefully planned activity and every team takes it very seriously. Their fans would boo them out of town if they didn’t pick some amazing players with an eye on the future. The relative positioning of players in the drafting process also determines what they are paid. It is therefore a crucial step in each player’s career to be drafted high up into a good team. Mr. Irrelevant For some players, drafting can be quite cruel too. For example, there is the title of Mr. Irrelevant bestowed on the last player to be drafted. He is often the first player to be dropped. However, many Mr. Irrelevants have proved the title wrong by going on to becoming valued players in their own right. The current holder of this dubious honor is David Vobora for the St Louis Rams. |
